Hana Lima 'Ia - classmates

I thought you might enjoy meeting my Hana Lima classmates. Stan, Charlie and I are staying in the same area in Wakiki. I have the pleasure of doing the 2 hour daily commute to and from the wood shop with them.

Stan is from Japan. He has made a ukulele from a kit in the past but due to limited tools and jigs he found the first build a challenge. He came to Honolulu to take the uke building course in Hana Lima's fully equipped shop and is doing a fabulous job of his black walnut and spruce tenor uke. In addition to quietly and skillfully completing each step of the process, Stan often takes the time to lend me a hand as well.

Charles is from Australia and is already a luthier in his own right. He has made some stunning guitars and now is turning his attention to the ukulele.  Charlie is soaking up many of the creative ideas that our instructor, Mike, has about instrument making.

Charle's enthusiasm and cheerful personality are super fun!

Rounding out this year's summer intensive at Hana Lima is Werner, who is from Germany. Werner has made one ukulele on his own prior to the class and is planning to continue building more 'jumping fleas' once he returns home.
