Our tour guide, entertainer and ukulele historian was none other than Fred Kamaka himself!
Fred guided us through the various eras of the Kamaka Company and then showed through the factory itself.
The original Portugese instrument that started it all was made by Nunes.
The first Kamaka pineapple was designed to create more volume for a bigger sound. Kamaka registered the patent for this shape. Once the patent period of 40 years expired many other companies added the pineapple design to their uke models.
Koa wood comes only from Hawaii, needs to stay out of the sun as it drys and takes a long time to dry.
The wood is guarded more diligently than the factory itself.
